Puzzling Pink Sludge on Secluded Tasmanian Coast Prompts Concerns of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation
Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Presence Across Beaches
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a stretch of a coastal area about 37 miles south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been documented on areas of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.
Specimens Gathered for Analysis

Faith Coleman, who was involved in studying the onset of the previous outbreak stated, based on photos of the local event, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"We have seen numerous of these events around Tasmania of late," she added.
The scientist said sea sparkle did not create harmful substances similar to the species involved in the previous severe algal bloom, but it does eat tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were in greatest danger.
"It's common to observe a proliferation of sea sparkle after a proliferation of something else, or something like a marine breeding," she noted.
Demands for Response and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in the state, commented it looked like the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and suggested the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, pointing to similar cases elsewhere.
"Thus the state needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the EPA need to react to this. We need to examine the specimens we've collected and we need to inform the community here," she emphasized.
She stated she had anxieties for people's well-being after feeling a prickling feeling along her body while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.

An conservation group has documented lifeless animals and expired organisms being found on the beach, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the state premier to see and "lead the reaction that authorities must be undertaking".
